Want to be a Referee?

So You Want To Become A Referee!

In order to become an on ice official in Canada you must first be certified under Hockey Canada guidelines through a Hockey Alberta certified program conducted here in Calgary by our Central Zone Referees Committee (CZRC). Currently this involves attending a two day clinic held at Mount RoyalUniversity in October. This provides classroom and on ice training complete with certification exam to ensure you have the “basic” knowledge to handle the lower levels of hockey (Novice / Atom / Pee Wee).

You must be at least 13 years of age as of December 31, to officiate in Alberta. In addition you must be at least 16 years of age to officiate for the Central Zone. We currently have two streams of assigning. The Westwood Referees Committee assigns referees and linesmen for all Novice, Atom and Pee Wee Level 5 (linesmen only) and below games. Recreational, Pee Wee 4 and above, Bantam, Midget and Junior are assigned directly through the Central Zone Referees Committee.

If you fall into the younger age bracket of 13 – 18, or an adult just starting out, please contact me directly so I can assure you we have a spot available for you with Westwood Referees. I will also provide you with registration information for the Central Zone clinic in October. I will also provide you with a Hockey Canada Rule Book and a Westwood Referees Procedures Manual, which will answer all your questions pertaining to procedures for registering, assigning, paying referees etc. If you wish to work exclusively with Central Zone and are a little older (18 – 80) you may contact the Central Zone Referees Committee directly on their website at www.czrc.ab.ca.

Please note, if you are content to officiate our younger levels the Westwood will be happy to register you even as an adult. There is no upper age restriction to referee at the community level. We are always happy to have adults enter into the referee program and help mentor our younger officials.

In addition to the Central Zone clinic, (October 20 + 21, 2012) you will also attend a supplemental Westwood Clinic (October 13, 2012). This is a three hour classroom and ice session which will fill in the blanks remaining after you complete the CZRC clinic. Times for this will be confirmed later in September.

You will be expected to initially pay for your clinic and registration but these monies will be refunded to you after successfully completing your course.

To register with Westwood Referees please give me a call (403-239-6325) in late August or early September. In order to ensure every official has an adequate opportunity to work our hockey and steadily improve we have limited the numbers to 40 officials each season so please do not be disappointed by leaving it to the last minute. When you call I will need;
